Pre-Conference Afternoon Workshop D – Monday 17th May 2010
Where and How to Leverage DPI in LTE Networks
Led by Continuous Computing
Workshop Overview:
With mobile broadband traffic doubling every 9 months it is now clear that Long Term Evolution (LTE) alone will be insufficient to meet bandwidth demand. Due to spectrum limits, operators cannot simply throw more capacity at the problem. To aggravate the situation, the economics of the mobile broadband business model itself are now in question. Due to flat-rate data plans, wireless usage is increasing significantly faster than revenues, leaving carriers struggling to balance profitability with the required level of network investment.
In light of these challenges, operators are turning to traffic management based on Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). Whereas today all traffic is essentially treated equally, DPI allows operators to vastly improve subscribers’ experience by intelligently shaping and offloading traffic to ensure those services which require higher Quality of Service (QoS) – such as voice and streaming media – are given priority. DPI also allows wireless operators to protect networks from being flooded by the growing amounts of viruses and spam.
